Asian football hopefuls learn path to Paris 2024 glory!

Japan were drawn in Group C of the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament Paris 2024 while Australia will open their campaign in Group B following the official draw in Paris on Wednesday.

The continent’s representatives in the Men’s Tournament will be decided at the AFC U23 Asian Cup Qatar 2024, with three automatic slots and a possible fourth from a playoff available.

Japan, who won the women’s silver medal in the 2012 London Games but were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the previous edition on home soil, will have world champions Spain, Nigeria or South Africa and Brazil for company in Group C.

Australia, fourth in the Tokyo Olympics, will have to contend with four-time winners USA, Zambia or Morocco and 2016 gold medallists Germany in Group B.

Hosts France were drawn in Group A with Colombia, defending champions Canada and New Zealand.

The top three teams from the AFC U23 Asian Cup Qatar 2024 will earn automatic tickets to the men’s tournament but their groups will be decided based on their performance in the last five editions of the Olympics.

The top-ranked Asian side will play in Group D with Paraguay, Mali and Israel their opponents. The second best AFC side will feature in Group C alongside Spain, Egypt and Dominican Republic while Asia’s third confirmed team will play in Group B with two-time champions Argentina, Morocco and Ukraine their opponents.

The fourth placed side from the AFC U23 Asian Cup Qatar 2024 will advance to a playoff against Africa’s Guinea, with the winners to take a spot in Group A which also consists France, USA and New Zealand.

Group A: France, Colombia, Canada, New Zealand
Group B: USA, Zambia/Morocco, Germany, Australia
Group C: Spain, Japan, Nigeria/South Africa, Brazil

Men’s Draw

Group A: France, USA, AFC4/CAF, New Zealand
Group B: Argentina, Morocco, AFC3, Ukraine
Group C: AFC2, Spain, Egypt, Dominican Republic
Group D: AFC1, Paraguay, Mali, Israel
