Atlético Ottawa has bid farewell to Spanish defender Miguel Acosta, the club’s all-time record appearance holder following the expiration of the defender’s contract.
Acosta joined Atlético ahead of the 2021 Canadian Premier League (CPL) season, leaving an indelible mark during his tenure. The Spanish defender, a product of the Atlético Madrid system, made 85 appearances for the club across all competitions, securing his status as the club’s all-time appearance holder last season ahead of Trinidad and Tobago international Malcolm Shaw. His notable contributions include four goals and six assists, and establishing himself as one of the CPL’s premier right-backs during his first two years with the club.
Fernando López, CEO of Atlético Ottawa, expressed his gratitude for Acosta’s contributions to the growth of soccer and Atlético in Canada, highlighting his commitment, dedication, and passion for the game. López acknowledged Acosta’s role in strengthening ties with Atlético Madrid and fostering a spirit of unity and excellence in Canada.
“From the moment he joined us, Miguel became an integral part of our team, leaving an indelible mark as our all-time record appearance holder. It’s always difficult to say goodbye to a player who has become such an integral part of our family,” said López.
The 25-year-old’s versatility and leadership were evident when he was named one of the club captains for the 2023 CPL season. Playing out of his favoured position, Acosta’s exceptional performance earned him the title of “Player of the Year,” as voted by Atlético’s official supporters’ group, Capital City Supporters Group (CCSG).
“As a product of the Atlético Madrid system, Miguel’s journey with us has exemplified the spirit of unity and excellence we are forging in Canada. We wish Miguel the very best in his future endeavours, confident that his talent and professionalism will continue to be on display wherever his career takes him. Thank you, Miguel, for everything you’ve given to Atlético Ottawa – you will always be a part of our rich history,” López added.
