Brazil instead of Argentina to host 2021 CONMEBOL Copa America!

Brazil will host the 2021 CONMEBOL Copa America. The decision was adopted on Monday, May 31 after the Brazilian government approved the request made by the Brazilian Football Confederation.

The search for an alternative host nation for the Copa America was needed after yesterday, CONMEBOL had removed Argentina because of the “present circumstances” in the country due to the pandemic.

CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez contacted The Brazilian Football Confederation’s President Rogério Caboclo to assess the possibility of Brazil hosting all 2021 CONMEBOL Copa America matches.

President Caboclo spoke with the President of the Republic of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, who supported the initiative immediately, with the endorsement of the ministries of the Civil House, Health, Foreign Affairs and the National Secretariat of Sports.

Brazil has a great experience in the organization of top-level sporting events, with the realization of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup and the 2019 CONMEBOL Copa America, among others.

“The Government of Brazil demonstrated agility and decision-making capacity at a fundamental moment for South American football,” said CONMEBOL President Alejandro Domínguez, who added that “Brazil is living a moment of stability, has proven infrastructure and accumulated and recent experience to organize a competition of this magnitude.”

The host cities of the event will be defined and disclosed as soon as possible.
