Bundesliga side 1.FSV Mainz 05 have parted company with head coach Martin Schmidt after the end of the 2016/17 season after the Swiss man had been in charge of the first team since February 2015.
“This mutual and amicable termination of our cooperation comes after a very frank and honest conversation with Martin Schmidt on Sunday evening. We have taken this decision as a result of our analysis of the current season and the lack of a prospect of continuing our work until his contract runs out in 2018. Martin Schmidt also agreed with this. We now require a new impulse and perspective on developing the club after a difficult season. Our unanimous decision was taken on the basis of a clear and professional view on the whole club,” said Mainz 05 sporting director Rouven Schröder.
“Even if we’ve parted company prematurely, we will still maintain a good relationship, as Martin Schmidt has performed very well for us over the last five years both in the Bundesliga and with our U23s. He has left his mark on this club. We wish him all the best for the future.”
Assistant coaches Peter Perchtold and Sören Hartung have also left the club.
No decision has been made as to who will replace Martin Schmidt as head coach of Mainz. “I hope to resolve this issue quickly, but we will not be influenced by external factors. This season has taught us that we should make important decisions calmly and consistently,” said Schröder.
After a difficult season, 1.FSV Mainz 05 only at the end of their Bundesliga campaign confirmed their top tier status for another year.
