Bundesliga: Hertha BSC sign 20 year old goalkeeper Jonathan Klinsmann!

German Bundesliga side Hertha BSC from the capital Berlin have signed the 20 year old goalkeeper Jonathan Klinsmann, the son of German football legend Jürgen Klinsmann.

Jonathan was able to convince the Hertha management in pre-season of his talent and the Hertha BSC sporting director Michael Preetz said, “Jonathan convinced us with his ability, charisma and ambition. He’ll now settle with us and develop step by step.”

Hertha goalkeeper coach Zsoly Petry added, “Klinsmann exudes calmness and confidence. He has a very good right foot and is also technically and athletically at a good level.”

Jonathan Klinsmann speaking about the moment he was told about getting a contract said, “This morning, Michael Preetz asked me to have a chat with him after breakfast. He told me a decision had been taken regarding my contract with Hertha. It was an unbelievably emotional moment for me, because this club has so much history in my family. I’m looking forward to getting to know the club more, the city of Berlin and taking on new challenges in Germany.”

The son of former Germany striker and manager Jürgen Klinsmann last played in the USA with the California Golden Bears of Berkeley University. The 1,94m tall goalkeeper contested nine games for the USA U-18s, and 21 for the U-20s. This summer, he reached the quarterfinals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup, which Maximilian Mittelstädt and Jordan Torunarigha also played at but for Germany. In March of 2017 at the CONCACAF U-20 Gold Cup in Costa Rica, he received the award for the tournament’s best goalkeeper.

His father Jürgen has been a Hertha member since 2004 and has the member number 18. His grandfather Siegfried, who was born close to Berlin, was a Hertha fan through and through. Now, Jonathan is the first Klinsmann to play for the capital club.
