CAF takes part in UN Counter Terrorism Programme!

Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) participated on Tuesday (June 29, 2021) in the “Securing of vulnerable targets from terrorist attacks: Challenges and opportunities of major sporting event security management” programme, a part of the second Counter-Terrorism week organized by United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT).

The Global Programme on Security of Major Sporting Events, and Promotion of Sport and its Values as a Tool to Prevent Violent Extremism (Global Sports Programme) led by the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) and its implementing partners; the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) and the International Centre for Sport Security (ICSS), developed ‘the United Nations Guide on the Security of Major Sporting Events: Promoting Sustainable Security & Legacies’ to assist Member States in the successful planning and implementation of security measures for Major Sporting Events.

CAF, through its Safety and Security Department, was a part of the group that put together this global guide, as the governing body of African football proudly continues playing its role in key initiatives shaping the global sports agenda.

During the last edition of Total African Nations Championship (CHAN) that was held in Cameroon last January and February, CAF opened doors for the group to be part of the CHAN tournament as observers, where they also got valuable data.

The meeting marked the launching the new United Nations Guide on the Security of Major Sporting Events: Promoting Sustainable Security & Legacies, presenting the technical assistance and training offered by the Global Sports Programme to Member States that are planning or intending to host MSEs, including on using these events for building resiliency to violent extremism.

Mr. Vladimir Voronkov, Under-Secretary General, United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) opened the event, which included among others sessions on Overview of the Global Programme: Progress, Priorities and Achievements, presenting the Global Guide on the Security of Major Sporting Events, The Global Guide’s Added Value: International and National Perspectives and Experiences, Discussion of the Technical Assistance Missions Provided by the Global Programme, and Leveraging Sporting Events to Prevent Violent Extremism.

CAF Head of Safety and Security Department, Dr. Christian Emeruwa represented the organization in this event.

“We are honored to be part of this historic milestone, which we believe will positively provide the needed guidance to major sport security organizations among countries. We commend UNOCT and her partners for taking the initiative to develop this guide with the active participation of CAF”, concluded Dr. Emeruwa.
