City of Frankfurt clears Deutsche Bank Park expansion!

Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt have received city council approval to expand the stadium by 11,000 new standing places.

There’s no question that the mood in the first week of April was almost like the best of times. 50,500 spectators against SpVgg Greuther Fürth, 48,000 and therefore sold out against FC Barcelona, 47,000 against SC Freiburg. The more than two-year phase of pandemic-related restrictions seems to be a thing of the past. Instead of games with completely or half-empty ranks, Eintracht Frankfurt is now even looking forward to a future with up to 60,000 visitors. This was announced early Sunday evening by Axel Hellmann, spokesman of the board of Eintracht Frankfurt Fußball AG, and the Frankfurt sports department head Mike Josef, to thunderous applause a few minutes before the kick-off against SC Freiburg.

“On behalf of Eintracht Frankfurt – and by that I don’t just mean those responsible, but above all the representatives of the fan advisory board, the fan club association, the Northwest Curve e.V., the Ultras and of course the fan and funding department – I would like to thank you very much. We fought for a number of years to get standing room and, 18 years ago, we worked to ensure that there was still standing room when planning the stadium. We have now achieved another major goal,” said a delighted Hellmann.

Mike Josef also welcomed the building permit and said, holding two folders in his hands, “We are opening a new chapter in the cooperation between the City of Frankfurt and Eintracht Frankfurt. I have the building permit for the expansion of the stadium for 11,000 new standing places. The stadium capacity will thus be increased to 60,000. Construction will start in late autumn, when things really get going. Many thanks for the good cooperation.”

In this context, Hellmann was also proud “that we will be trading the Jürgen-Grabowski back straight in a week and at the same time have received the building permit for the development of the stadium. That makes me very happy and I would like to thank the city of Frankfurt on behalf of all Eintracht fans.”

The agreement serves as the next important step in numerous infrastructural measures that Eintracht Frankfurt has initiated and implemented in recent years. Whether the operation of the Deutsche Bank Park since 2020, the completion of the ProfiCamp 2021 or the majority ownership of the Sportpark Dreieich in March of this year – and now the prospect of as many spectators as only five other Bundesliga clubs can currently accommodate. The Deutsche Bank Park currently has a capacity of 51,500 spaces.
