Confident India Women aim to maintain all win SAFF Women’s Cup record!

After pumping in half-a-dozen goals past Maldives in their first match, the Indian Senior Women’s National Team next take on Sri Lanka in their second game at the SAFF Women’s Championships 2019 on Sunday, March 17 with a place at the top of Group B on the line.

The Indian women go into the encounter on the back of a three-day break, and Head Coach Maymol Rocky feels her wards have “fully recovered”, and “eager to head into battle”.

“The players are ready for the next match. There were slight injury concerns for a couple of players after the previous game but they have recovered fully,” she informed.

The Coach maintained the focus has been on keeping the morale levels high, and working on a few tactics on the field. “We have prepared well in these three days. We did recovery post-match, gave the players some time to rest, and there was a team-building session as well,” she stated.

“In the last two days, we have worked on our attacking play. The sessions have been intense, with each player coming up with an excellent output.”

While playing away from home is always a challenge, a major hurdle that the team has had to overcome is the drastic change in temperatures. The side returned to Delhi after playing in the Turkish Women’s Cup earlier this month, before leaving for Nepal.

“In Turkey, the weather was quite cold, even dropping below 10°C at times,” Maymol quipped. “Biratnagar is how and humid (between 30-35°C). But we have adjusted fast,” Maymol added.

Both India and Sri Lanka stay currently on 3 points, courtesy victories against Maldives. The two sides last met in 2016 at the South Asian Games in Shillong, where India ran out 5-0 winners.

“We want to finish on the top of the group, and will go out with an attacking mentality. We are confident of winning, and maintaining the clean sheet as well.”
