CONCACAF has announced that the Dominican Republic will host the 2022 CONCACAF Women’s U-20 Championship (CWU20) and 2022 CONCACAF Women’s U-17 Championship (CWU17). The World Cup Qualifying competitions will take place from February 25 – March 12 and April 23 to May 8, 2022, respectively.
These two tournaments will be part of a hugely important year of Women’s football in our region that will also include the CONCACAF W Qualifiers and Championship, and the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica.
The CWU20 and CWU17 Championships will each be disputed in two rounds, beginning with a 16-team group stage. After round robin play, the top three teams in each group will advance to the knockout stage (joining the four best teams from their respective qualifiers). The knockout stage of the competitions (round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, third place match and final) will all be played in a single match direct elimination format.
At the conclusion of the events, the champions, runners-up and third place finishers will qualify for the 2022 FIFA Women’s U-20 and U-17 World Cups.
The official group stage draw for the CWU20 will take place on Monday, November 15, followed by the CWU17 on Thursday, November 18. Fans and media will be able to follow both draws beginning at 11:00 am ET via the CONCACAF Facebook page, CONCACAF YouTube channel and the CONCACAF Official App. The free mobile app is available in the iTunes and Google Play stores.
2022 CONCACAF Women’s U-20 Championship
Dates: February 25 – March 12, 2022
Participating teams (listed in alphabetical order): Bermuda, Canada, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Curaçao, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and USA.
Qualifiers: The first round of qualifying took place from September 13-17, 2021, in Curacao. The 13 participating teams were split into four groups. After round robin play, the four group winners; Bermuda (Group A), Cayman Islands (Group B), Curacao (Group C) and Suriname (Group D) have advanced directly to the Knockout Stage of the 2022 CWU20. FIFA World Cup: The 2022 FIFA Women’s U-20 World Cup is scheduled to take place in August of 2022, in Costa Rica. In total, 4 teams from the region will participate (Costa Rica, as the host nation and the winner, runner-up and third place finisher).
The United States is the current champion (sixth title overall) of the CWU20 after defeating Mexico 4-1 in the 2020 Final.
2022 CONCACAF Women’s U-17 Championship
Dates: April 23 – May 8, 2022
Participating teams (listed in alphabetical order): Bermuda, Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, Curaçao, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago and USA.
Qualifiers: The first round of qualifying took place from October 20 to November 1, 2021, at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL, USA. The 10 participating teams were split into three groups. After round robin play, the three group winners; Saint Kitts and Nevis (Group A), Curaçao (Group B) and Honduras (Group C), as well as the best ranked second-place finisher (based on a weighted points system), Guyana (Group B), have advanced directly to the Knockout Stage of the 2022 CWU17. FIFA World Cup: The 2022 FIFA Women’s U-17 World Cup is scheduled to take place in October 2022, in India. In total, 3 teams from the region will participate (winner, runner-up and third place finisher).
The United States is the current champion (fourth title overall) of the CWU17 following a 3-2 win over Mexico in the 2018 Final.
