On July 30, 2023, the supervisory board of FC Gelsenkirchen-Schalke 04 e.V. reached a mutual agreement with Dr. Bernd Schröder to terminate the contract of the CEO, effective as of July 31, 2023. Schröder will remain available to the club in an advisory capacity until the end of the year in order to ensure an orderly handover.
Axel Hefer, chairman of the supervisory board stated: “The supervisory board and Bernd Schröder have been in intensive consultation over recent weeks regarding the future of the cooperation. As a result, the decision has been taken to make a personnel change at the top of the executive board. On behalf of the entire club, I would like to thank Bernd for his great commitment and for the work he has carried out. I wish him all the best for the future, both professionally and privately.”
Dr Schröder began working at Schalke 04 on 1st January 2022 as chairman of the board, also taking on responsibilities in our strategy, sales, marketing, IT/Digital and communication departments. “I’ll always have fond memories of my time at Schalke. It was intense, emotional and challenging: fitting of the current climate at the club. During this time, we were able to lead the club with levelled heads, develop new strategies and introduce important measures which will be important for the medium- and long-term development of the club. The club’s best asset remains its 175,000 members and millions of fans. Thank you all for supporting Schalke 04 day in, day out. It’s something I’ll never forget,” said Schröder as he bid farewell to the club which has meant so much to him during his time here.
His duties on the supervisory board will be assumed by Christina Rühl-Hamers (chairwoman of finance, staffing and law) and Peter Knäbel (chairman of sport) until further notice.
Axel Hefer gave the following concluding statement: “Christina Rühl-Hamers and Peter Knäbel have the full support of the board, and they will lead the team together as a duo until further notice. They’ve already been working together very successfully since 2021 despite extremely challenging conditions, and so we’re convinced they’ll do a good job once again. This stability will allow us sufficient time to search for a new chairman of the board and will ensure that we are able to make the decision that is in the best interests of Schalke 04.”
