It seemed the writing had been on the wall, but then no one really expected it as Quess East Bengal FC head coach Alejandro Menedez Garcia on Tuesday, January 21 stepped down from his position post the Kolkata derby defeat on Sunday.
East Bengal in a release said, “The head coach has expressed his desire to relocate to his home country Spain for personal reasons. He will step down with immediate effect.”
The Spaniard faced a lot of criticism after East Bengal had suffered a hattrick of I-League defeats against Churchill Brothers, Gokulam Kerala FC and the one against arhrivals Mohun Bagan being the final nail in Alejandro’s coffin.
Alejandro Menedez Garcia said, “I am happy for the progress the club has made during my tenure as the head coach and I wish to see the new leadership to take this progress to the next level. I enjoyed my duration with the club and wish the team and the fans all the best.”
But only eight points from seven matches and seventh position in the 2019/20 I-League table wasn’t good enough for the club management, their corporates partners and especially the fans, who last Wednesday during the loss to Gokulam Kerala FC had shouted ‘Alejandro go home’.
Meanwhile Quess Corp CEO Subrata Nag commented on Alejendro’s exit by saying, “We admire the leadership of the coach and the significant professional changes he brought at East Bengal in such a short period of time. He has led the team in the right direction, and we thank the coach for his contribution to the club and wish him much success for the future.”
The assistant coaches of Quess East Bengal FC will act as interim coaches until a new head coach is appointed by the club.
