FC Goa back to winning ways with 2-1 win over Jamshedpur FC!

FC Goa left it late but secured all three points against Jamshedpur FC on Wednesday night at the Tilak Maidan thanks to a third brace of the season from Igor Angulo. Jamshedpur FC, who came into the game on a six-game unbeaten run, took the lead in the first half but saw the Gaurs rally back to complete a memorable comeback.

Stephen Eze scored for Jamshedpur FC in the first half before Igor Angulo took over the scoring duties for the rest of the game. The Spaniard’s first strike from the penalty spot this season was followed by a 94th minute header – securing the third win of the campaign for Juan Ferrando’s men.

Ferrando rang in two changes to the starting line up with Ivan Gonzalez and Princeton Rebello coming in for Alberto Noguera and Aibanbha Dohling.

It was a slow start to the game with the first 30 minutes of the game remaining confined to a midfield battle with neither keeper having to do anything of note.

The first big moment of the game came in the 32nd minute. A brilliant touch from Alexander Romario Jesuraj played in Igor Angulo. Stephen Eze, though, was in time for Jamshedpur FC to deny the forward a strike on goal.

Eze was equally effective on the other end a minute later. The defender got the better of James Donachie at the far post from an Aitor Monroy free kick before directing his attempt on the volley past Mohammad Nawaz to put the ‘home side’ in the lead. That remained the telling touch in the first 45 when the teams walked off for half time.

The first big moment of the second half came on the wrong end of the pitch as Nawaz was called into action in the 52nd minute. The keeper pulled off a brilliant save to thwart Aniket Jadhav, who had squirmed free on the right edge of the box thanks to some good touches before unleashing an effort on goal. Nawaz’s timely intervention saw the effort skim off the post rather than hitting the back of the net.

With FC Goa in search of an equaliser, the game became more open and a truly end to end affair. The Gaurs’ first real opportunity came a minute later when Igor Angulo was able to get behind the Jamshedpur FC backline. The Spaniard ran half the length of the field, but failed to keep his effort on target.

Angulo, though, didn’t have to wait long for his 7th of the season, striking on the 64 minute mark to bring the game back on level terms. This time it was from the spot after Alex Lima was deemed to have brought down a surging James Donachie in the box.

The Spaniard strode up to the plate before sending TP Rehenesh the wrong way to bring Goa level.

Jamshedpur FC nearly upset the applecart a few moments later, coming close to scoring their second against the run of play in the 70th minute when Nerijus Valskis stepped up and smacked the post from a free kick from about 30 odd yards out. A following effort saw Valskis find Eze again in the Goa box, but the defender failed to find the telling touch on this occasion.

The Gaurs went back on the offensive, but the repeated assaults on the Jamshedpur FC goal was met by some impressive last-ditch defending.

The Red Miners nearly snatched away all the points in the 87th minute ok the back of Alex Lima’s effort.

But it was FC Goa and Igor Angulo, though, who would go on to write the final lines to this tale. Impressive work from Jorge Ortiz on the right flank helped the Gaurs win a corner in the 3rd minute of added on time.

A minute later, FC Goa, clad in their away black kit for the night, were seen celebrating a winner as Edu Bedia’s ball from the corner was met by Angulo. The Spaniard got in front of his man before improvising to guide the ball into the back of the net using the back of his head.

The win sees Goa leap to fifth on the points table, level on points with fourth placed NorthEast United FC and only one behind Bengaluru FC, who currently occupy the third spot on the table.

The Gaurs will be back in action on Wednesday, December 30 when they take on Hyderabad FC. The game is slated for a 7:30pm IST kickoff.
