To kick off the 2022 FIFA World Cup – Qatar Team Seminar, FIFA President Gianni Infantino welcomed representatives of all 29 qualified member associations to Doha and underscored the organisation’s responsibility for setting the stage for the best edition of the global showpiece ever.
The seminar covered key organisational aspects of the tournament and provided all the delegations with important information in relation to teams’ preparations for the competition and their stay in Qatar, including on matters such as security, human rights, transport and the Team Base Camps.
“You, your teams and your coaches are the actors and it is our job to create the stage for the greatest FIFA World Cup ever,” the FIFA President said. “The conditions are the best in terms of the climate in November and December, the players will be in peak form in the first third of the season, there will be no [long-distance] travel and there are state-of-the-art stadiums and training facilities.”
“In addition, there is something special here in Qatar: a heart – a heart that beats for football with a passion that is incredible for a country and region that will host the World Cup for the first time. Fans coming together to see the tournament will celebrate together and five billion fans worldwide will witness your teams creating this positive energy as we make this a fantastic success for everyone.”
Thanks to Qatar’s uniquely compact nature, the idea of the Team Base Camp being a team’s home away from home will ring truer than ever. In principle, teams will be able to stay at their Team Base Camp throughout the competition, not having to travel to the match venues days prior to each game as all stadiums will be located within convenient driving distance. This will allow for longer periods of rest and match preparation.
Prize money
The associations were also given an update regarding the prize money for the competition.
As mentioned in the FIFA Annual Report 2020, the 2022 FIFA World Cup – Qatar prize money will amount to USD 440 million.
The breakdown is as follows (all figures are in USD):
- Champions: USD 42 million
- Runners-up: USD 30 million
- Third place: USD 27 million
- Fourth place: USD 25 million
- 5th-8th place: USD 68 million (USD 17 million per team)
- 9th-16th place: USD 104 million (USD 13 million per team)
- 17th-32nd place: USD 144 million (USD 9 million per team)
In addition, each qualified team will receive USD 1.5 million ahead of the competition to cover preparation costs.
