Fiji captain & A-League MVP Roy Krishna joins ATK!

Former Indian Super League champions ATK have announced that Fiji captain Roy Krishna would be joining them for the 2019/20 season.

Indian origin Roy Krishna comes to Kolkata from Australian A-League side Wellington Phoenix, where he played the last five season. Last term Roy Krishna won the golden-boot award and the Johnny Warren medal of the A-League

Roy Krishna in an official social media statement wrote, “140 years ago my ancestors came to Fiji from Kolkata in India in search of better opportunities. Today marks the start of a similar journey as I join ATK in the Hero India Super League Club.

I’m delighted to join ATK for a year. I have taken my time to make what I feel is the right decision for me and my family, and ATK presents a great new opportunity for me in a new league.

I’m grateful for the Wellington Phoenix and the fans of the club who showed me so much love. I leave with the best memories of the club’s fans.

My journey started off in the small town of Labasa where I grew up before Fiji Football gave me my first international break later in my teens. I would like to acknowledge the former Fiji Football coach Carlos Buzzetti and my New Zealand based manager Rex Dawkins who were both instrumental throughout my career. Rex offered me my first international contract and I’m pleased that he has negotiated this move as well.

As I make my way to Kolkatta, my new home for the ISL season, I look forward to working with the club and engaging with its fans. I’m impressed by what I’ve heard and seen of the club, its culture and its fanbase, and I’m really excited to head out there in the next few months. At the same time, I look forward to introducing the club and its fans to Fiji, my homeland. I’m eager to promote Fijian tourism, people and culture while in India.

I feel like we’ve come full circle as I head back to where it all began for our forefathers.”

Krishna’s stats speak for himself. He has scored 23 goals in 35 international matches for Fiji, while having played 122 matches, scoring 51 goals from 2014 over the last five years for Wellington Phoenix.
