‘Five’ star India U-16 Girls ride on Renu’s hattrick in 5-1 win over Malaysia!

India Under-16 GirlsThe Indian Under-16 Women’s National Team grabbed their first win of the AFC U-16 Girls Championship qualifiers as they decimated Malaysia 5-1 in Wei Fang, China today, September 1.

A splendid hattrick by substitute Renu and a goal each by Soumya Guguloth and Thailand Devi led the Indian eves to a rather comfortable win in a show of dominance in the second half, after Malaysia had pulled one goal back in the first half.

The Indian Girls got off to a flying start as they took the lead as early as the 3rd minute when Soumya Guguloth burst onto the left flank, cut inside and unleashed a curling shot which ended into the back of the net to give India the lead.

The Indian girls however failed to build on their superb start and fell prey to complacency in the 10th minute allowing Malaysia to come back into the match as Goalkeeper Monika Devi fumbled a routine cross into the net, equalizing Malaysia’s deficit.

The high octane opening minutes of the match was followed by India dominating possession and the Indian defence standing strong to clear any Malaysian attacks.

In the 30th minute, the Indian girls upped their ante and fostered two clear goalscoring chances in the less than two minutes. First, Thailand Devi was found clear of the defensive mix in the box by Sanathokpi’s delicious cross, Thailand’s header however went wide of the goal. A minute later, Bawtilung raced clear off the Malaysian defence line and with only the opponent goalkeeper to beat, she shot wide of the goal.

In the 40th minute, the Malaysian Goalkeeper made a world class save to deny Soumya from close range, after she latched onto a through ball from the left flank.

Despite taking an early lead, the Indian eves failed to build on it and at the half-time the Teams went into the tunnel at level pegging as the scoreline read 1-1.

The Indian eves took little time to get off the blocks in the second half as well and in the 47th minute, Soumya’s shot flew whiskers wide of the goal. A minute later, Grace released substitute Renu onto goal and the latter found the net to give India the lead as the scoreline read 2-1.

In the 51st minute, Renu once again was found clear of the defensive mix in the 18 yard box and thumped the ball home to double India’s lead as the scoreline read 3-1.

In less than ten minutes of the second half, the Indian eves had taken the match by the scruff of its neck and while the Indian defence cleared any Malaysian attacks, the Indian attack force maintained constant threat on the Malaysian net.

Samiksha’s shot in the 57th minute came close to tripling India’s lead but as destiny would have it Renu, in the 68th minute completed her hattrick as she comfortably placed the ball into the net to make it 4-1.

In the dying embers of the match, Thailand Devi added more gloss to the scoreline as her header found its way into the back of the Malaysian net from a corner kick to make the scoreline read 5-1.

Despite not taking every chance that came that way, the Indian eve scripted a dominating performance and at the end of time the full-time scoreline read 5-1 in India’s favour.

The Indian eves clash swords against Northern Mariana Islands next on Saturday, September 3.
