Former Bundesliga champions VfL Wolfsburg sack head coach Valerien Ismael!

Former Bundesliga champions VfL Wolfsburg on Sunday, February 26 evening parted ways with their French head coach Valérien Ismaël with immediate effect following a run of poor results.

“Having considered all the facts and circumstances, we came to the mutual conclusion that a parting of ways is the correct measure in order to get the team back onto a successful track. Our decision was not based solely on the most recent result of the game against Bremen, but rather based upon the impressions and results from recent weeks and months. We would like to thank Valérien Ismaël, for immediately agreeing to take charge of the team during a very difficult phase in October 2016 and making a massive effort to improve the situation. In spite of all of our very best efforts, we have not been successful in getting back on track sportingly,” explained the clubs Sporting director Olaf Rebbe.

Valérien Ismaël took charge of the Bundesliga team on October 17, 2016, initially as caretaker-coach and then as full-time head-coach from November 6 onwards. The Frenchman was previously coach of VfL Wolfsburg’s Under-23 team in the 2013/2014 season, and again from 2015 onwards. Valérien Ismaël was head-coach of VfL Wolfsburg for 17 competitive games, achieving six victories.

But the former defender had little chance of really turning things around with Wolfsburg losing a key player in Julian Draxler in the winter transfer window and numerous signing made but the curve not really showing upwards in recent weeks.

VfL Wolfsburg stated that a new head-coach is expected to be officially presented on Monday, February 27.
