Former I-League winning Mohun Bagan coach Sanjoy Sen resigns after defeat!

After another lacklustre performance which resulted in a rare 1-2 home loss, former I-League winning Mohun Bagan AC head coach Sanjoy Sen resigned at the post-match press conference in Kolkata tonight.

Mohun Bagan after three consecutive I-League home draws were considerable under pressure for a win tonight and suffered a 1-2 defeat at the hands of minnows Chennai City FC.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Sanjoy Sen said, “I cant say about the team, but it is the end of the road for me. It is the right time to take responsibility on my shoulders and move away from the club.”

“This is the first home (I-League) match I lost. I tried a lot, I do not have the mentality to continue after this loss and three home draws where we could not come back. I cant deny that,” Sen said at the Mohun Bagan ground.

Sanjoy Sen added: “Nobody sacked me, this is a personal decision. I should not continue as the supporters also have emotions attached with the club and I just cannot keep on making the fans unhappy. Im not fit to continue.”

“Before I was sacked, I think I have taken the right decision. As Gerard Houllier said you are no coach unless you are sacked?”

“I had decided beforehand that I will step down if we lose today. I have taken the wise decision. Thank you everyone,” the 57-year-old Sanjoy Sen ended.

After having worked with the AIFF as part of the India youth set-up, Sanjoy Sen coached United SC successfully in the I-League before moving to Mohammedan Sporting Club. In December 2014, Mohun Bagan appointed him head coach for the 2014/15 I-League, which the Mariners went on to win. The next season, Mohun Bagan won the 2016 Federation Cup but since then the club has been trophyless and after a good and solid start into the I-League amongst other things a Kolkata derby win, the team has been missing influential captain Sony Norde due to injury like other players.

The writing was on the wall, win or perish. In the end even the Mohun Bagan faithful turned against their successful coach, who resigned before he was fired.

Now the search starts for Mohun Bagan to replace Sanjoy Sen. Will it be inhouse solution Shankarlal Chakraborty, or a local Kolkata solution or will the Mariners cast their web of finding a replacement wider and bigger. We can only wait and watch.
