In a surprise move, 2014 FIFA World Cup winner Andre Schürrle today, July 17 announced his retirement from football aged only 29.
The former Germany international had earlier in the week agreed to cancel his contract with Borussia Dortmund, which was to run until 2021 and now decided to announce to hang up his boots.
29 year old Ludwigshafen am Rhein born Andre Schürrle, where he played at youth level for Ludwigshafener SC before joining 1.FSV Mainz 05.
It was at Mainz 05 where Schürrle made his senior debut. He left the club to join Bayer 04 Leverkusen and thereafter he went on to play for Chelsea FC, VfL Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund.
But at BVB, Schürrle couldn’t make it as a regular, so he spend time on loan with Fulham FC and Spartak Moscow.
Schürrle in an Instagram post explained his decision to retire:
Hi all,
I want to let you know that I’m stepping away from playing professional football !!
On behalf of myself and my family I want to thank everybody who was a part of these phenomenal years! The support and love you shared with me was unbelievable and more I could have ever asked for!
Now I’m ready and open for all the beautiful possibilities that are coming towards me ??
