Goa Police Cup: Sporting Clube de Goa demolish Churchill Brothers 4-0!

Sporting Goa - Churchill BrothersSporting Clube de Goa demolished Churchill Brothers SC 4-0 in a completely one sided affair at Duler Stadium in Mapusa. Harpreet Singh (34’), Seriton Fernandes (44’), Cajetan Fernandes (60’), and Avrhishto Fernandes (90+’) got on the scoresheet for Sporting Goa.

The initial quarter of the match saw a fairly balanced affair on the field. Sporting Goa had an early opportunity in the 2nd minute when Seriton beat his marker to launch a right footer which the keeper barely managed to get his hands on. After a good amount of midfield play Sporting Goa drew the first blood when a Joseph Pereira corner found Harpreet on the edge of the box who ripped the ball into the Churchill Brothers nets as everyone stood still and watched. After scoring the first goal Sporting Goa controlled the match. Gaffer Mateus Costa made a crucial tactical change when he pushed the creative midfielder Quan Gomes further up to partner with Victorino and Seriton. Quan bossed the midfield creating havoc in the Churchill Brothers defence. In the 44th minute the move paid off as Quan send three Churchill Brothers defenders the wrong way while setting up Seriton who was never missing from that range. The score stayed 2–0 at half time.

The second half completely belonged to Sporting Goa as the Churchill Brothers defenders found it hard to match up with the pace of Ganesh Thakur who was introduced at the break. Sporting Goa could have easily made it 3-0 when Victorino made a fantastic run on the left beating everyone to come head on against the keeper who somehow managed to block his shot. The resulting rebound once again came to Victorino who’s second attempt was blocked for the second time by the Churchill Brothers defender Janifar Clemente. However this couldn’t stop Sporting Goa offense as Victorino kept making dangerous runs into the box. In the 60th minute Clemente brought down Victorino in the box and Cajetan made it 3–0 from the spot for Sporting Goa. In the dying minutes of the match Avrhishto Fernandes took a shot from about 25 yards, the Churchill Brothers keeper made a mess of it gifting Sporting Goa their fourth goal of the evening. With this win Sporting Goa avoid finishing last in Group A of Goa Police Cup 2016.

But Calangute Association having beaten both sides earlier, have qualified from the group for the semifinals.
