Guam FA receives AFC Grassroots Charter Bronze membership!

The Guam Football Association (GFA) has been awarded the AFC Grassroots Charter Bronze membership for its continuous efforts in raising the standard of the grassroots in the East Asian island.

The Grassroots Charter is a development tool for Member Associations to raise the quality of their grassroots programmes.

It identifies 20 performance categories, such as grassroots competitions, fairplay, partnerships and personal development, which have all been met by GFA.

The grassroots philosophy of GFA is outlined within its Long-Term Player Development (LTDP) Model that provides guidelines for player development in seven stages, from the age of five to promoting optimal physical, emotional, psychological, mental, technical and tactical growth.

Participation growth of grassroots football has witnessed tremendous growth over the past 10 years. In 2016, GFA recorded 4020 participation of both boys and girls, almost doubled from their efforts in 2006. Under the LDTP, it has provided a platform for the various age groups with grassroots football competitions for the youth, men, women and master’s divisions.

Furthermore, among its many player programmes is the Centre of Excellence, which is a collaboration between GFA and United Airlines, providing players with aspirations of playing football at a higher and more competitive level a suitable environment, instilling the right values and focusing on a holistic approach.

GFA has also developed a strong relationship with the Independent Interscholastic Athletic Association of Guam (IIAG), a governing body for school athletics in Guam, by assisting them in their boys’ and girls’ high school and middle school tournaments. On top of that, GFA provides schools and clubs with equipment in their off-island efforts.

To help prevent physical assault and verbal abuse during sanctioned events, GFA has implemented a Zero Tolerance Policy that applies to all coaches, players, parents, spectators and other supporters or referees.
