Guam & Malaysia receive Silver status in AFC Grassroots Charter!

The Guam Football Association (GFA) and Football Association of Malaysia (FAM)’s AFC Grassroots Charter membership have been upgraded to Silver as a result of their commitment to continue raising the level of grassroots football.

Under strict health and safety protocols due to the pandemic, the GFA and FAM have shown resilience and forward-thinking by organising grassroots activities for various age-groups, boys and girls, regardless of their abilities.

The GFA will plan various grassroots programmes in 2022, with the 14th Annual Girls MS “Sugar & Spice” Festival and 9th Annual Girls HS Challenge Cup kicking off in March followed by a campaign against bullying in the following month.

Additionally, a sensory enrichment programme and special Olympics Guam Soccer Camp are also planned later in the year while the boys’ and girls’ youth leagues will continue to be featured in their grassroots programmes.

GFA President Valentino San Gil said: “I’m very honored to receive the news that Guam is among many of the top MAs in Asia earning Silver Status as an AFC Grassroots Charter member.

“This latest recognition is testament to our commitment to deliver opportunities for the local community to further increase participation in the sport and for overall development of our growing list of athletes, coaches, officials, administrators, and staff. I look forward to the next phase in grassroots development and new successes for football in Guam over the next few years.”

In Malaysia, the Liga SupaRimau, targeted for boys and girls in various age-groups, will be in the forefront of grassroots activities in addition to the FAM Grassroots Day that will comprise Grassroots Coaching Clinics and small-sided football games.

FAM will also leverage on the power of football to organise a campaign to help those struggling with obesity and a Football for Mental Health campaign to improve the mental wellbeing among youth and children.

FAM Technical Director, Scott O’Donell said: “I would like to congratulate all the people involved in FAM being awarded the Silver Membership under the AFC Grassroots Charter. It is a recognition of all the unseen hard work being done behind the scenes to grow grassroots football in Malaysia. There is still a long way to go but it is a great start.”

The AFC Grassroots Charter is a development tool that aims to raise the quality of Asian grassroots programmes. It identifies 20 performance categories including competitions, fairplay, partnerships and personal development.
