Guwahati to host the opening match of the 2016 Indian Super League (ISL)!

Indian Super League logoThe Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) has decided and finalised that the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati would be the venue for the 2016 Indian Super League opening match which would see NorthEast United FC take on Kerala Blasters FC on Saturday, October 1.

The FSDL in a press release stated, “The north eastern region of India has established itself as the emerging football powerhouse in the country. By awarding Guwahati the rights to host ISL 2016 opening ceremony, Football Sports Development wishes to celebrate north east’s contribution to the development of Indian football and recognise the potential it has in shaping the future of the beautiful game in the country.”

Guwahati would be the third Indian city after Kolkata and Chennai to host the ISL opener with Mumbai and Goa having hosted the ISL finals.

And it is a big honour for Guwahati and the whole North-East, which is a hotbed of Indian football talent and rising football clubs.
