Heiko Herrlich replaces Martin Schmidt as head coach at FC Augsburg!

Struggling Bundesliga side FC Augsburg have agreed terms with Heiko Herrlich to become their new head coach after Martin Schmidt’s departure yesterday afternoon. He will work together with the current coaching staff. The 48-year-old has signed a contract lasting until June 30, 2022.

“We’re certain that we’ve found a coach that suits FCA perfectly in Heiko Herrlich,” said sporting director Stefan Reuter. “He’s an absolute professional, who is known throughout the Bundesliga both as a player and as a coach. We’re certain that Heiko Herrlich will bring us back to winning ways.”

“I’m looking forward to this new challenge at FCA,” explains Herrlich. “I’m grateful to have the chance to be able to work day in, day out coaching a team again. FCA is a really well run club with a passionate fan base. I’m delighted to be a part of this club, which is always looking to improve.”

Back-to-back promotions with Regensburg

Heiko Herrlich has previously worked for the DFB during his coaching career, taking charge of the U-17 and U-19 youth national teams. His first job at club level was with VfL Bochum. He has also coached SpVgg Unterhaching, as well as achieving back-to-back promotions in just 18 months with SSV Jahn Regensburg, taking them to Bundesliga 2. He also qualified for the UEFA Europa League during his recent spell at Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

Heiko Herrlich was a well-established Bundesliga striker during his playing days, spending time at Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Borussia Dortmund (257 games, 74 goals). He managed to finish top scorer in the Bundesliga during his time as Borussia Mönchengladbach. He also won a number of titles throughout his career, lifting the DFB Pokal with both Mönchengladbach and Bayern Leverkusen (1993, 1995) and winning the Bundesliga twice with Borussia Dortmund (1996, 2002). He also won both the UEFA Champions League and the Intercontinental Cup within the same year at BVB (1997).
