For Nikhil Barla, the 135th Durand Cup presents more than just another tournament as it offers the chance to represent Jamshedpur FC in front of his home crowd in Ranchi.
Hailing from Khunti, on the outskirts of Ranchi, the versatile defender is eagerly looking forward to the Men of Steel’s Group C fixtures at the Birsa Munda Football Stadium, where family, friends and supporters from his hometown are expected to cheer him on.
The homecoming comes after Barla achieved another significant milestone in his career by making his senior India debut. The accomplishment was celebrated in his native village, where he received a warm welcome from the local community in recognition of becoming one of the region’s latest footballing success stories.
Now back with Jamshedpur FC, Barla has shifted his focus to the Durand Cup as the squad continues preparations under Head Coach Kaizad Ambapardiwala.
“Playing in Ranchi is something I’m really excited about. It’s close to my hometown, so having my family, friends and people from my village watching me play would make it very special. After representing India, I’m motivated to keep improving and contribute to the team’s success in the Durand Cup,” said Barla.
A product of the Jamshedpur youth team setup, Barla’s journey reflects the pathway Jamshedpur FC has built for young footballers. Having graduated from the academy, he steadily progressed through the club’s development system before establishing himself in the first-team setup.
As preparations continue, Barla has also been spending time with the latest batch of Tata Football Academy cadets, sharing his experiences and encouraging them to dream big.
“Whenever I train with the our academy boys, I see a lot of myself in them. I started my journey here, so it’s nice to come back and interact with them. I always tell them to enjoy the process, work hard every day and stay patient because opportunities come to those who are ready. TFA gave me the foundation for my career, and I’m grateful for everything I learnt here,” he said.
Jamshedpur FC are preparing for the Durand Cup with a squad comprising experienced senior Indian players and promising youngsters from the club’s youth development system. The tournament will serve as an important part of the club’s preparations for the upcoming Indian Super League season under Head Coach Owen Coyle while also providing valuable exposure to the next generation of talent.
The Men of Steel begin their Group C campaign against Defenders FC of Sri Lanka on July 26 before taking on Sporting Club Delhi on August 4 and Indian Air Force Football Team on August 13. All three matches will be played at the Birsa Munda Football Stadium in Ranchi, giving Barla the opportunity to represent his club in front of his home supporters for the first time in the Durand Cup.
