RB Leipzig - Subrata PalIndia international goalkeeper Subrata Pal has been named amongst 15 Indian athletes who will be conferred with the 2016 Arjuna Award by the Department of Sports, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports of the Government of India.

Nicknamed ‘Spiderman’ for his strong performances for Team India at the 2011 AFC Asian Cup in Doha, Qatar against Australia, Bahrain and South Korea; has been one of the many highlights in Subrata Pal’s long career with started off as a teenager with the Tata Football Academy.

The boy from Sodepur after his two years in Jamshedpur with TFA returned to Kolkata to join Mohun Bagan AC and there he witnessed his darkest hour in football with Dempo SC striker Cristiano Junior of Brazil dying on the pitch after a collision or not with Subrata, which nearly ended his young football career.

In the end this episode made Subrata stronger and after three seasons with Mohun Bagan he joined their Kolkata rivals East Bengal Club in 2007 and after two years he left for Pune FC and had three good seasons with them. Thereafter he played for Prayag United and was signed by IMG-Reliance in 2013 for the Indian Super League players pool but after the postponement of the league, he joined Rangdajied United FC on loan.

In early 2014 he joined FC Vestsjælland in Denmark to spend some time with them before returning to India for the first ISL to play for Mumbai City FC for two campaigns. In the I-League he played on loan for Salgaocar FC and DSK Shivajians FC and now this summer he joined NorthEast United FC ahead of the third ISL.

After having been a regular for the India juniors, Subrata Pal made his full India debut under Bob Houghton for an injured Sandip Nandy in 2006. He was India’s No. 1 for a number of years before Gurpreet Singh Sandhu took over the baton last year with Subrata now being India’s No. 2.

Congrats Subrata to a great achievement! You deserve it my friend!!!
