Indian Football Olympian Syed Abdul Salam no more!

aiff-logo-new-black-whiteFormer Indian international and football Olympian Syed Abdul Salam died at his Salarjung Colony residence in Hyderabad on Saturday, December 3.

Syed Abdul Salam is survived by his two daughters and two sons. After his playing days, Syed Abdul Salam coached the India senior and junior teams besides his native Andhra Pradesh and he retired as the Deputy Director of the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh.

Only days after the 60th anniversary of one of India’s biggest football victories over Australian at the 1956 Olympics, in which Syed Abdul Salam had played as a central defender he is no more. He also had represented India at the 1958 Asian Games.

At the club level, Syed Abdul Salam had his most successful stint with Kolkata giants Mohammedan Sporting Club with the most successful year with the club was 1957, when they won the Calcutta Football League and IFA Shield titles.

AIFF President Praful Patel in his message said, “It is sad to hear that Mr. Salaam is no more. His contribution to Indian Football will never be forgotten. I share the grief.”

AIFF General Secretary Kushal Das said, “Mr. Salaam will be alive in his achievements. He has been the inspiration of so many Footballers. May He Rest in peace.”
