A total of eighty (80) girls from the villages of Kongo-Central took part in a football festival organised by CAF to conclude the CAF D Licence training programme in Kwilu-Ngongo, DR Congo.
The festival, held at the Kwilu-Foot Academy, consisted of various football workshops designed for girls aged between 6 and 12.
Speaking from the event, Fédération Française de Football (FFF) instructor, Ludovic Debru said: “The training program began on 05 March with the aim of educating coaches on the nuances of coaching 6 to 12-year-old children in football. The program specifically focused on understanding the unique characteristics of this age group and emphasized that the role of a coach is, first and foremost, to facilitate learning and growth.’’
For a week, the 30 aspiring coaches, which included 9 women coaches were taken through the programme which has a strong focus on early football childhood development thanks to the CAF-led initiative, with the support of UEFA and FECOFA.
Lamia Boumedhi, a CAF instructor who also coaches TP Mazembe Ladies, focused on crucial elements such as awareness, initiation, and technical skills.
“The festival is an essential part of the learning process. We involved 80 young children from the indicated category, and we put the coaches in situations that allowed them to introduce the youngest players to football. The aspiring coaches were responsible for managing the set. The success of the event highlights the progress that has been achieved over the last week.’’
The training is part of CAF’s women’s football development initiatives which is inspired by Dr Patrice Motsepe’s 10-point action plan, which aims to develop football across the cities and rural areas across the continent.
CAF Head of Women’s Football Development Meskerem Tadesse Goshime added: “We aimed to train coaches in Kongo-Central so that they could return to their communities and promote the development of football. Our objective is to lead by example and empower women to become role models in their communities. Additionally, we want to encourage greater community involvement and engagement of women and girls in football, with the ultimate goal of keeping them involved in the sport for a long time.”
The celebration of International Women’s Day continues in DR Congo with the kick-off of a CAF C Licence course, which will be exclusively organised for women coaches. The programme, which starts on Tuesday, 12 March will run until 8 April in Kinshasa.
