ISL-3: FC Pune City score 2-1 win over former champions Atletico de Kolkata!

fc-pune-city-atletico-de-kolkataFC Pune City scored a vital 2-1 victory against former champions Atletico de Kolkata in a Indian Super League – Season 3 match at the Balewadi Stadium in Pune on Sunday night.

It was a special match for FC Pune City coach Antonio Lopez Habas against his former club ATK, whom he has coached successful over the first two seasons of the ISL winning the title in 2014.

Both teams showed their attacking intend from the start as the marquees Mohamed Sissoko (FC Pune City) and Helder Postiga (Atletico de Kolkata) had the first for their sides. It continued to be a fast-paced encounter before the hosts took the lead in the 41st minute as centre back Eduardo Ferreira headed in a Jonatan Lucca cross. It stayed 1-0 for FC Pune City at the break.

Things got worse for Atletico de Kolkata in the 56th minute when the referee awarded FC Pune City a penalty for a Pritam Kotal handball. Mexican striker Anibal Rodriguez took a rather weak penalty and Debjit Majumder got his hand to it, but the ball still went in to give FC Pune City a 2-0 lead.

But Atletico de Kolkata didn’t give up and tried to get back into the game. In the 66th minute teenage substitute Bidyananda Singh which keeper Edel Bete cleared for a corner. Only a couple of minutes later ATK got their penalty as Sissoko worked a little too much on Postiga and the referee pointed to the dreaded spot. Canadian international Iain Hume took the penalty, which wasn’t too good as Edel Bete saved it but Hume put away the rebound to reduce the deficit.

ATK now went into all out attack to at least salvage a draw. Postiga’s 72nd minute shot caused a lot of problems to Edel Bete, but he collected the ball on a second attempt ahead of a lurking Hume. In the end it stayed 2-1 in FC Pune City’s favour to confirm their first home win of ISL-3.
