Jamshedpur FC’s Owen Coyle speaks after Bengaluru FC loss!

After Jamshedpur FC suffered an unfortunate loss in the Steel Derby against the Blues at the Athletic Stadium in Bambolim, Jamshedpur FC Head Coach talks about the result against Bengaluru FC, the effect of the loss on the team’s campaign and much more.

Thoughts on tight fixture ending in Bengaluru FC’s favour…

I feel that this result was self-inflicted as we should have dealt with the long throws in a better way. Then the goal from a corner in the back could have been blocked away and the third goal is obviously an error which should have not happened the way it did. But regardless of the errors, we did create some wonderful chances in the attacking third, but Gurpreet Singh Sandhu made some great saves to keep his team in the game. Ultimately, we never took our chances and Bengaluru FC did. In terms of deserving of it, we certainly deserved something out of the match. But that’s the margins in the Hero ISL with some very good teams going at each other which is exactly what we saw tonight but we certainly didn’t deserve to lose the game. If a team makes a couple of mistakes then this is what the end result will be and I think we did make some errors on the pitch. We did not have our skipper at the back who keeps the defensive line intact and is vocal with the team which is what we missed out on.

On the loss affecting the team’s chances of qualifying for the playoffs…

Prior to the game, we had registered three consecutive wins in the season. So we’ve been doing very well so far. We were isolated in our rooms for more than 2 weeks and didn’t get to go through with much training. Obviously, a few players were also missing from the line-up due to Komal Thatal, Jordan Murray picking up injuries and Peter Hartley out due to suspension. But the first half was wonderful for us and we even scored a great goal in the opening minutes from an open play which is a positive sign but we could have added more onto that later. Even in the second half, we had some great chances to score from and capitalize on but we were unable to convert. So that’s the nature of this league and particularly this season we are having. But we’ll take a punch in the nose and we’ll look to bounce back very quickly moving forward.

On Greg’s performance in the attacking third…

Greg was outstanding on the pitch and he almost scored a wonderful goal as well but an unbelievable on-the-line clearance denied us our second goal. He even had some wonderful shots in the game and created a bunch of chances as well. But the truth is that you may score on some days and fail to score sometimes which is the true nature of the sport. However, Greg was excellent on the pitch with what he brings to the game and every time when he gets the ball, we get excited because he’s a wonderful talent and can produce brilliance with his abilities. It’s always nice to score goals and he could have had a couple of goals. But at the moment we are not worried about him not scoring as Greg contributes so much more to the game and to the team apart from goals.

On Komal Thatal’s injury status…

Komal Thatal had a recurrence of his hamstring injury and we were hoping to have him available for the game but he was not fully fit to step up to the pitch. So, Komal will take a few weeks to be back in the playing squad. Jordan Murray after coming out of his quarantine, only had 2 days of training and pushed himself a little too hard in the training session which made him miss the game. We hope he’ll be there to be involved in the next game for us and we just have to make sure that these lads are all fit and healthy because the isolations have been a huge blow to the teams. Everyone has suffered in many ways due to the quarantine but we will pick ourselves up as there are still a lot of points to be won and we will aim to win them to enter the playoffs.
