Keeper Niclas Thiede returns to VfL Bochum!

Niclas Thiede is returning to Castroper Straße. The 24-year-old goalkeeper will join VfL Bochum on a free transfer from 3.Liga side SC Verl and has signed a contract that runs until June 30, 2027. After playing for SC Freiburg, the Hagen-born player has now been the regular keeper at SC Verl for two seasons in a row.

Niclas Thiede played for VfL Bochum for the first time at the age of nine. In the summer of 2015, he moved from RW Essen back to Bochum’s academy. Here, the 1.86m tall goalkeeper came to the attention of SC Freiburg with good performances in over 50 games for the U-17 and U-19 teams. He made his Bundesliga debut for the Breisgau club in 2019, but otherwise played for the second team, where he was promoted to the third division as champion of the Regionalliga Südwest. The nine-time DFB junior international has been in goal for SC Verl since 2021 and has demonstrated his abilities in 56 games there.

“We are delighted that Niclas Thiede has decided to return to his old stomping ground,” said Marc Lettau, Technical Director at VfL Bochum 1848. “He has received top training as a goalkeeper here in Bochum as well as in Freiburg and has already been able to play almost 100 games at senior level. Niclas will complete our goalkeeper team at a high level because he has developed into a regular goalkeeper in the 3rd division and therefore has a lot of competitive experience. He is convinced of the perspective we offer him and has also documented this with his long-term commitment.”

Niclas Thiede has always felt “connected to VfL. I know the stadium, and was often a spectator here as a child and in my youth. That’s why I’m very happy that the move to VfL has worked out. I am also looking forward to working with Peter Greiber, to whom I owe a lot. I’ve followed VfL’s progress closely over the past few years and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the team and the club to succeed in staying in the league again.”
