Kuala Lumpur recommended as hosts for the 8th AFC Medical Conference!

The AFC Medical Committee has selected Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as the venue for the eighth edition of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Medical Conference to be staged in 2025 at its fifth meeting held virtually today.

Following the postponement of the 7 th AFC Medical Conference to March 2023, the Committee acknowledged the feasibility of hosting the biennial Conference in the ASEAN Zone, with the Malaysian capital selected for the second time after successfully staging the Conference in 2011.

Further, the AFC continued to expand its network of world-class medical centres in Asia by recognising the University Malaya Medical Centre in Malaysia as the latest AFC Medical Centre / Clinic of Excellence. The Centre will be an asset towards sound professional care of players and contribute towards the development of Football in Asia.

The Committee also discussed the study of the prevalence of disorders of sex development (DSD) among female footballers in Asia and the possible need for gender guidelines in football. The AFC Medical Committee agreed to convene a consensus meeting of experts in March 2023 in conjunction with the AFC 7th Medical Conference.

The AFC’s commitment to ensure Asian football remains free of doping was further underlined as members were briefed that the AFC Anti-Doping Unit conducted 670 doping controls, braving the prevalence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Members were also updated on the organisation of the 7th AFC Medical Conference Doha 2022 which for the first time received endorsement by the British Journal of Sports Medicine, UK.

The Conference currently has 115 speakers with 40% of female speakers delivering three keynote presentations, five lectures and 21 symposiums covering a varied range of topics. Additionally, participants will receive CPD points (18.75 hours) from the Ministry of Public Health, Qatar.

In conjunction with the Conference, medical professionals serving football will be awarded with the AFC Distinguished Service Awards for their outstanding contributions toward the development of the sport and football medicine.

The members were also updated on the research study “Prevalence of mental health & harassment” among Asian footballers.
