After the 2-3 defeat to 1.FC Köln on Friday night and just one point from the last four games, FC Augsburg have made the decision to make changes to the coaching staff. As a result, the club has parted company with head coach Heiko Herrlich and his assistant Iraklis Metaxas with immediate effect.
Markus Weinzierl, former FCA head coach from 2012 to 2016, will take over immediately as head coach. The 46-year-old, who previously led the club to the UEFA Europa League, has signed a contract running until June 30, 2022. Reiner Maurer will join the Fuggerstädter as his assistant, having last been employed by TürkGücü München as their head coach.
“During our detailed analysis, we came to the decision that we needed to change our coach. We had long and positive conversations with Markus Weinzierl over the weekend and were convinced that he’s absolutely the right man for FCA during our current situation, plus we sensed his huge desire to work here again,” said Stefan Reuter, sporting director. “We would like to thank Heiko Herrlich and Iraklis Metaxas for their hard work at the club and wish them all the best for the future. Ultimately, we lost belief in the fact that we would be successful in the final games with the current setup.”
Markus Weinzierl will first work with the squad on Tuesday and will have the next two weeks to prepare the team for the upcoming game at VfB Stuttgart (Friday, May 7, 20:30h CEST). “I’m really excited to be working with Stefan Reuter and the team again and to be able to carry on from the successful years we’ve had together. I owe the club a lot and want to lead FCA back to successful times. It’s really nice to have the chance to be head coach of FCA again and I’m convinced that together we will achieve our goal of remaining in the Bundesliga,” said Markus Weinzierl.
