Match officials set for educational journey in the AFC Referee Academy!

The AFC Referee Academy on Monday welcomed its largest-ever intake of 50 match officials from 28 Member Associations (MAs) who will undergo a three-year educational programme that is specifically and carefully designed to produce more world-class referees in Asia.

Batch 4 of the AFC Referee Academy will comprise of 41 men and nine women referees who will be tutored by former match officials as well as key speakers and mentored by AFC Referee educators on a wide range of topics related to refereeing including technical and physical sessions.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC)’s General Secretary Datuk Seri Windsor John urged the latest joiners to follow in the footsteps of Asia’s renowned referees, “In the last seven months alone, the AFC’s match officials have officiated, not only on the world’s biggest stages, but also in the Final – the pinnacle match – of nearly every major competition.”

“It is clear that the ball is now in your hands to continue Asia’s proud tradition. And that journey begins right here, in the only Confederation academy of its kind in world football. Over the next three years, we have designed the best possible environment tailor-made for you to excel.”

The AFC Referee Academy opened its doors in 2017 with the objective of increasing the number of AFC referees at the world-class level and extending support to the AFC MAs.

Since its launch, 109 match officials from 33 MAs have benefitted from the Academy, with as many as 46 now registered on the FIFA international list, further underlining the impact of the AFC’s educational programmes to elevate the potential of Asia’s match officials.
