In the opening fixture of the Punjab Super League 2019-20, the defending champions Minerva Punjab FC scored a 4-0 win over Border Security Force – Jalandhar at the BSF Football Stadium.
In the scorching heat of Jalandhar, BSF started on a good note by dominating the possession in the first 25 minutes. Minerva Punjab FC maintained their shape and started building slowly from the back. They were rewarded for their patience in the 36th minute when a perfect ball from Sanju Pradhan found Chothe in the 18 yard box of the opposition who opened the scoring with a sublime half volley. The first half ended with Minerva having a slender lead.
Minerva Punjab FC started the second half with high pressing and quick passing. In the 53rd minute Harminder Singh doubled the visitors lead when a build up play from the midfield was culminated by a defence tearing pass from Sanju. The new look away side under their new manager Yan Law were growing in confidence post the first two goals. The third goal came in the 74th minute when the high pressing game of Minerva Punjab FC was rewarded with loose ball which was finished by Chothe after going around the keeper. The Home side tried to come back in the game but was unable to finish the ball into the net. Sanju after giving two assists got onto the scoresheet when a long through ball from Souvik Das found him in the opposition’s half. He went around a defender and the goalkeeper to score into an open net.
The match ended with the away side scoring four past BSF in their home turf. Sanju Pradhan on asking about his first match as a Warrior and wearing the captains armband said, “I was glad to captain the side in my debut match for the team. I thank the coach to show that amount of confidence in me. We were clinical in the match and I am delighted with the teams performance. We played a beautiful brand of football and hopefully will continue this form in the I-League as well.”
