Mizoram Premier League – Season 5 kicks off in style!

Mizoram Premier League 5 - captainsThe Kick Off programme for the 5th edition of the ‘McDowell’s No.1 Soda’ Mizoram Premier League was held on Friday, August 26 evening in Aizawl. The AIFF vice-president Larsing Ming officially kicked-off the MPL5.

The first round of fixtures will be played from September 1 with matches taking place in the afternoon and at night. All fixtures are to be played at the Lammual ground in Aizawl city.

The Kick-Off programme was attended by officials from the Mizoram Football Association, MPL club owners and officials, players and staffs as well as members of the press.

The Mizoram Football Association president Lal Thanzara stated that he was happy to see the MPL in its 5th year and thanked all those who have put in the effort, financially and otherwise for playing a part in its success. He also remarked that the MPL is the most revered local sporting event among the people of Mizoram. And also commended the role of the state government in helping football grow in the state.

Captains of each club were then called on for the oath taking, each pledging to respect the rules and the sanctity of the game.

The MPL season 5 handbook was also released on this night with McDowells official, Vipallava Raj Singh doing the honours. And then there was a presentation of the new club kits and introduction of players and staffs of each clubs.

The AIFF vice-president Larsing Ming then addressed the gathering and stated that Mizoram is the only the second state league which is televised in the country after the Calcutta Football League. He also spoke of how he is happy to see Mizoram becoming a top representative amongst the Northeast states in Indian football. Larsing Ming then officially kicked off the 5th Season of the Mizoram Premier League.

MFA Honorary Secretary Lalnghinglova Hmar then had a quick preview of the upcoming season and explained the new changes to be implemented this season. The tournament format remains the same, but Round 7 of the MPL5 is scheduled to be played at Champhai (a town on the Myanmar border) and will be broadcasted live by Zonet TV as well.

MFA signed a MoU with a local cable TV giant Zonet TV to run the Mizoram Premier League on 2012. This season is the fifth edition of MPL which will conclude on mid-December with the MPL final.
