Mohun Bagan celebrate their Mohun Bagan Day!

The auspicious Mohun Bagan Day to commemorate the club’s historic feat of becoming the first Indian club to win IFA Shield by beating British team East Yorkshire Regiment in 1911 was celebrated in club tent on Monday, July 29.

A full house saw Mohun Bagan celebrate the day in style as the event kicked off when junior players garlanded the statue of legendary Gostha Pal. The afternoon session started with an exhibition match involving former players which ended in a 1-1 draw. Highlights of the day was the felicitation of dignitaries and awards in different categories. The newly elected secretary of IFA, Joydeep Mukherjee graced the occasion and the club felicitated him for his new role.

The Mohun Bagan Under-19 boys, Rajkumar Pal, Tapas Dey and Arijit Bagui have been awarded in Best Young Footballer, Best Cricketer, Best Athlete and Best Footballer respectively.

Ashok Chatterjee on receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award thanked club management for this gesture and described that it was an award which was very close to his heart. Also awarded were footballer and current MP Prasun Banerjee and two time Olympic hockey gold medallist Keshav Datt with the highest honour of the club, Mohun Bagan Ratna. Prasun Banerjee dedicated the award to the supporters who inspired him to be a better player and person in life. Keshav Datt who could not attend the ceremony due to age related ailments expressed his gratitude towards Mohun Bagan through a nicely crafted video. He is the first non footballing sports person to receive the prestigious Mohun Bagan Ratna award.

Club handed the Life Membership to eminent personalities Sourav Ganguly, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Deb Shankar Halder, Subimal ‘Chuni’ Goswami and Dr. Vece Paes, who could not attend the function.

The musical performance given by eminent singer Anupam Roy mesmerized the supporters present in the occasion. A large supporter base carried out chants and a superb pyro show in the gallery.

In another effort to solidify the presence of Mohun Bagan in global arena, the club management took a positive step to get included in prestigious Club of Pioneers. Mohun Bagan is the first Indian club which becomes part of this elite group.
