The National Football League (NFL) confirmed on Wednesday that Frankfurt and Munich have won the bid to stage four regular-season NFL fixtures in Germany over the next four years, starting from the 2022 season.
“We are very pleased to welcome Munich and Frankfurt to the NFL family and are excited to reward our fans in Germany for their passion by bringing them the spectacle of regular-season NFL football,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
Frankfurt Sports Councilor Mike Josef said: “American football was and still is at home in Frankfurt. That’s why I’m very pleased about the NFL’s decision to come to Frankfurt on a regular basis. Having NFL games at two venues is ideal. It shows that we as the city put a lot of effort into it and delivered, together with Eintracht Frankfurt and many supporters, a good overall concept. It is no exaggeration to say that we have achieved something historic by bringing the biggest football league in the world to the football city of Frankfurt. This is where American football began in Germany in 1945 and that story is now set to continue.”
Eintracht Frankfurt board member Axel Hellmann added: “The NFL is coming to Germany and bringing football back to Frankfurt. We are totally thrilled and very proud that the NFL has decided to play two games in Frankfurt over the next four years – here with us at Eintracht Frankfurt, in the heart of Europe. We are looking forward to it tremendously.” Patrik Meyer, Managing Director of “Eintracht Stadion GmbH”, said: “We are very pleased that the NFL has decided to play games at our stadium. Welcome to Frankfurt, welcome to the heart of Europe.”
“We’re looking forward to partnerships with Munich and Frankfurt that will extend beyond the games and help us to deliver accelerated growth in Germany,” said Brett Gosper, NFL Head of Europe and UK. “The strong interest we received underlines what a fantastic opportunity regular-season games offer for a host.”
Nine cities initially expressed their interest when the selection process for staging NFL games in Germany began last year, before Düsseldorf, Frankfurt and Munich were invited to take part in a thorough application process. As well as the games themselves, the partnership between the NFL, Munich and Frankfurt includes joint fan activities, community involvement programs and other NFL initiatives.
