NorthEast United FC extend contract of five defenders!

Indian Super League franchise NorthEast United FC have announced the contract extension of five of their defenders ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Amongst the defenders are Gurjinder Kumar, Provat Lakra, Joe Zoherliana, Mashoor Shereef, and Ngasepam Tondonba Singh, who all will play another season for the Highlanders.

31 year old Nawanshahr-born Gurjinder Kumar played for the Chandigarh Football Academy and Tata Football Academy in his youth.

His first senior contract was with the now defunct Pune FC in 2010. Thereafter Gurjinder played for Salgaocar (2014), Pune City (2015, loan), Salgaocar (2015/16), Minerva Punjab FC (2016/17), Mohun Bagan (2017–20), and since the 2020/21 season he has been a NorthEast United FC player.

25 year old Kalimpong-born Provat Lakra moved in his youth to Kolkata and had his breakthrough with United SC sister club Pathachakra FC.

He moved on loan to Gokulam Kerala FC for the 2017/18 I-League, where he impressed and earned a move to NorthEast United FC in 2018 and since then he has established himself with the Highlanders.
23 year old Lengpui-born Joe Zoherliana started to play locally in Mizoram before moving to the Shillong Lajong FC Academy in Meghalaya, where he also made his senior debut in the Shillong Premier League.

Thereafter he returned to his home state to play for Mizoram Premier League giants Chanmari FC of Aizawl before joining Indian Super League outfit FC Pune City U-18s.

Joe Zoherliana then returned to his home state to play for Aizawl FC before moving to Bengaluru FC and last year he returned to the NorthEast to join the Highlanders.

29 year old Malappuram-born Mashoor Shereef Thangalakath played locally in his home state of Kerala. Thereafter Mashoor Shereef made his professional debut for Chennai City FC in 2017 and spend three seasons with the I-League club.

Mashoor Shereef in 2020 then joined NorthEast United FC and established himself within the Highlanders squad.

27 year old Manipur-born Ngasepam Tondonba Singh played at youth level locally in the state.

Tondonba Singh had his big breakthrough in the 2017/18 season with NEROCA FC which resulted in a transfer to ISL side Chennaiyin FC. After two years with the Marina Machans, Tondonba Singh moved to Mumbai City FC where he only played once in their ISL title winning campaign.

Then in 2021, Tondonba Singh moves back to the NorthEast and he joined the Highlanders.
