Nottingham Forest sign Gonzalo Montiel from Sevilla FC!

Nottingham Forest have announce the signing of Argentina international Gonzalo Montiel from Sevilla FC.

The 26-year-old has joined Nottingham Forest on a loan deal which runs until the end of the season, and could become permanent beyond that.

Montiel arrives having enjoyed an impressive 2022/23 campaign which saw him win the UEFA Europa League with Sevilla FC and FIFA World Cup with Argentina – scoring the decisive penalties in each of the respective finals.

The full-back made his international debut in March 2019 against Venezuela and has since received a further 22 caps for his country, playing four times at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar last winter.

Born in González Catán, Argentina, Montiel came through the ranks at River Plate and made his professional debut back in April 2016.

The full-back enjoyed a trophy-laden five years with his boyhood club, with his honours including three Copa Argentinas, one Primera División title and one Copa Libertadores – the highest level of competition in South American club football.

After making 140 appearances for River Plate, Montiel moved to Sevilla in August 2021, going on to play 72 times for the Spanish LaLiga side.

Featuring 43 times across all competitions last season, Montiel was a key player in Sevilla’s UEFA Europa League winning campaign. The defender also appeared in four of Sevilla’s UEFA Champions League group stage matches last term, scoring once.

Montiel now moves to England with 235 career appearances under his belt, becoming Forest’s fourth signing of the summer transfer window.

Montiel will wear the number 29 shirt during his time on Trentside.

Gonzalo Montiel said, “I’m really happy to have joined this club.”

“I’ve been watching the Premier League since I was child, I used to watch every game. As a player you want to play in the best league, and the Premier League is just that.”

Forest’s Chief Football Officer, Ross Wilson, said: “We are pleased to welcome Gonzalo and his family to Nottingham.”

“He has already experienced some major achievements in his career and he is looking forward with anticipation to the next chapter with Nottingham Forest.”
