The Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) and the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) have today signed a Memorandum of Understanding, which will see the two confederations work together for the further development of football in both regions.
As part of the MoU, both parties have undertaken to strengthen their cooperation and dialogue, with an aim to develop football in their respective territories and to focus on matters of common interest.
This will include sharing knowledge and experience on areas such as administration/management, development of competitions, training camps, women’s football, coaching, refereeing, education, corporate and social responsibility.
Both parties will provide mutual support in the promotion of football through the exchange of information, experience, knowledge and good practices on matters and areas of common interest.
The MoU was signed by OFC President, Lambert Matlock, and CONCACAF President, Victor Montagliani, at the OFC Congress held in Auckland, New Zealand. The event was attended by multiple football stakeholders from across the world and took place the day before what will be a hugely exciting draw for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023.
“This is a significant step for football in the Oceania region and will give the OFC and its Member Associations a valuable opportunity to learn from the extensive knowledge and experience which exists with CONCACAF,” OFC President and FIFA Vice President Lambert Matlock said. “This will be important in OFC’s ongoing work towards the long-term goal of qualifying two teams to the FIFA World Cups in 2026-2027. Our sincere gratitude goes to CONCACAF and all involved in making this MoU a reality. Together we are mutually committed to promoting football and all it brings to our respective communities.”
CONCACAF President and FIFA Vice President, Victor Montagliani added: “I am extremely pleased to sign this MoU with the OFC and firmly believe it will strengthen what is already an excellent relationship between the two confederations, both of which have the exciting prospect of FIFA World Cups taking place in their regions in the coming years. Several CONCACAF Member Associations share similar challenges and opportunities to OFC federations, and I have no doubt there is much we can learn from each other, with the growth of the game across our respective regions the ultimate goal. I want to personally thank the OFC President, my friend Lambert Matlock, for the work that he and his team have done to make this agreement a reality. Between us, we share a strong sense of working to prioritize access to the game for all, to supporting our federations, and to ensuring that football is developed in all regions and territories across the world. I look forward with great anticipation to our two confederations working more closely together in the coming years.”
Both confederations will meet on a yearly basis in order to evaluate the status of undertaken and implemented projects and evaluate performance.
