Paul Fernie named new SV Darmstadt 98 sporting director!

Paul Fernie has been appointed as the new sporting director at SV Darmstadt 98. The 36-year-old was most recently sporting director for Bundesliga 2 club SV Wehen Wiesbaden. SV 98 will announce the exact date of the start of work in the next few days, as well as a date for the official presentation at a press conference.

SV Darmstadt 98 president Rüdiger Fritsch said, “In the search for a sporting director, we worked out a desired profile that is one hundred percent in line with that of Paul Fernie. Accordingly, we are very happy that Paul will be working for us in this position. We were looking for a team player who would take over the overall sporting area in a responsible position and who would bring clear ideas and implement them, especially in the areas of squad planning, scouting and analysis. In addition, he has a very good network and has already proven in the past that he always finds ways to work successfully without an immense budget thanks to unusual and creative solutions.”

At the age of 22, the Englishman was already working as a scout for Doncaster Rovers, and in the following years he worked in this role for Crawley Town, Nottingham Forest and Blackburn Rovers. In October 2016, Fernie joined SV Wehen Wiesbaden and was appointed head of the scouting department. Between October 2019 and June 2021, the family man headed the scouting department at the MLS side New York Red Bulls before returning to Wiesbaden as sporting director.
