Peter Zeidler becomes new VfL Bochum head coach!

VfL Bochum 1848 has a new head coach for the first team: Peter Zeidler is moving from Swiss first division club FC St. Gallen to the Ruhr area. The 61-year-old has signed a contract that is dated until 30 June, 2026. Both clubs have agreed not to disclose the transfer modalities.

The Swabian-born coach’s coaching career began in the mid-1980s, and he joined VfB Stuttgart in 1984 as an assistant coach in the youth sector. Zeidler gained his first head coaching experience at VfR Aalen, the first time in the Bundesliga he was an assistant coach for TSG Hoffenheim. Since 2011, Zeidler has been active as a coach abroad, in France (FC Tours, FC Sochaux), Austria (FC Liefering, Red Bull Salzburg) and in Switzerland. After his first Swiss stint at FC Sion (2016/17), he successfully coached FC St. Gallen in the Super League from 2018. Under his leadership, FC St. Gallen was runner-up once and reached the cup final twice. The oldest Swiss football club finished the 2023/24 season in fifth place.

“I’m happy to be here, at VfL Bochum, and I’m looking forward to the Bundesliga,” Peter Zeidler briefly summed up his first impressions of Castroper Straße before the press conference on Monday afternoon.

Ilja Kaenzig, managing director of VfL Bochum 1848, has already worked with the new head coach, “Peter Zeidler and I know each other very well, but this is not the reason for the signing, but was behind a process of several weeks of the search for a coach. He is a football lover with a lot of energy and emotionality.”

“We are very much looking forward to going into the new season with Peter Zeidler,” said Marc Lettau, sporting director of VfL Bochum 1848.

A big thank you from all those responsible at VfL Bochum 1848 also goes to Heiko Butscher and Marc-Andre Kruska. The two coaches have taken over responsibility for the first team in an extremely difficult situation and will now, after successfully staying in the league, return to the Talentwerk.
