RB Leipzig extend contract of midfielder Emil Forsberg!

King Emil is staying in Leipzig! On Wednesday, May 12, RB Leipzig and Emil Forsberg agreed on an early contract extension until 2025. This means the attacker is set to go into a tenth season with the club.

Emil started playing for RB Leipzig in January 2015 and has since made 211 competitive appearances with 103 direct goal involvements (47 goals, 56 assists). The 56 assists are a club record. With seven of his goals coming in the UEFA Champions League, the 29-year-old is also the club’s record goalscorer in the competition. He is also statistically RBL’s best ever penalty-taker, with 17 converted spotkicks to his name so far.

In the Bundesliga, he holds the all-time league record for most assists in a single season – 22 in 2016/17.

Emil Forsberg said, “When I first came to Leipzig more than six years ago, it was a very big step for me. I was 23 years young and it was my first move abroad. So much has happened since then it’s incredible. After a tough first six months I was able to properly find my feet and we’ve all gone on to achieve big things. Promotion to the Bundesliga, Champions League qualification and now our second DFB-Pokal final. I’ve had an amazing time here and I want more years like this at RB Leipzig. It’s a fantastic club and I am excited for the years to come.”

“For me and my family, Leipzig has become our home. We are unbelievably happy here in this awesome city. I also felt the incredible support of our fans from day one, even through times where things weren’t going so well on the pitch. That was, and still is, very important to me. So I hope we can reward our fans with the club’s first major trophy on Thursday night – they deserve it more than anyone!”

Florian Scholz, commercial sporting director and CMO, said, “We are delighted about the early extension of Emil’s contract until 2025 and the planning security it gives RB Leipzig. Emil has been on our journey with us since 2015 and has played a huge role in us establishing ourselves as one of the top teams in the Bundesliga. Emil has become a fan favourite here thanks to his footballing abilities and his cool character. He is also an important leader in the team and commands the respect of everyone at the club. We are excited to continue working with him next season and are pleased that he shares our hunger for more success.”

RB Leipzig technical director Christopher Vivell said, “Emil has continued to grow along with RB Leipzig since 2015 and has developed his outstanding skills year in year out. As an intelligent pass master with an exceptional shooting technique that makes him a constant danger in front of goal, he is one of the best attacking players in the Bundesliga. In addition to that, he is our unofficial man for the big moments and his personality has earned him the admiration of everyone in the team. So we are especially pleased to see him put pen to paper and commit to the club for the coming seasons.”
