Reggae star Alpha Blondy & ‘Coup de Marteau’ song to headline CAF AFCON 2023 closing ceremony!

Ivorian global reggae icon Alpha Blondy will headline the closing ceremony of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023.

Born Seydou Kone, the ‘Cocody Rock’ star is among the top line-up of performers for the ceremony as the curtains on the 34th edition of the showpiece continental sporting event are drawn at the magnificent Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Ebimpe on Sunday.

The 71-year old is expected to perform the song that shot him to global fame, celebrating the music, culture, and people of Côte d’Ivoire, while calling for unity and collective celebration.

Also on the bill are Serge, Roseline, Didi B, Tam Sir and Team Paiya, who together will perform the famous and current hit song ‘Coup de Marteau’, which has grown to become the unofficial song of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Cote d’Ivoire 2023.

This pop song has captured the spirit of the tournament and the enthusiasm of Ivorians, embodying how a musical work can transform into a symbol of national pride and sports support.

The theme for the closing ceremony reflects the spirit of the tournament and adopts a distinct narrative approach focusing on light effects, pyrotechnics, innovative visual projections, and musical performances.

To emphasize this theme, an orchestra consisting of 123 children and 14 trainers will form an orchestra to perform. Their repertoire includes the official song “Akwaba” composed by Ivorian popular group Magic System, Nigerian Yemi Alade and Mohamed Ramadan from Egypt.

In attendance will be the President of the Republic of Cote d’Ivoire, His Excellency, Alassane Ouattara, CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe, FIFA President Gianni Infantino, among others.

Host Cote d’Ivoire and Nigeria will battle it out in the decisive match of the tournament. Les Elephants, as the Ivorians are nicknamed, are hoping for a third title after 1992 and 2015, whilst Nigeria’s Super Eagles are targeting their fourth title after triumphs in 1980, 1994 and 2013.
