A day after their head coach Sanjoy Sen resigned, struggling Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan AC have elevate his assistant Shankarlal Chakraborty into the head coach’s position.
Former Tata Football Academy cadet Shankarlal Chakraborty had joined Mohun Bagan in July 2014 along with Subhas Bhowmick and stayed on as assistant coach of Sanjoy Sen and the duo had a very successful stint by winning the 2014/15 I-League and the 2015/16 Federation Cup.
While Sanjoy Sen was the head coach, Shankarlal Chakraborty was given the task of being the main coach of the Mohun Bagan team in the 2016 and 2017 Calcutta Football League, but on both occasions archrivals East Bengal lifted the trophy.
After the 1-2 loss to Chennai City FC, Shankarlal Chakraborty now has his task cut out with a squad short on confidence and missing key players due to injury, while next facing defending champions Aizawl FC on Sunday, January 7.
Mohun Bagan in an official statement said, “the club management have decided to elevate Mr. Shankarlal Chakraborty, as the Head Coach for the remainder of the 2017-18 season.”
“The club management would like to thank Sanjoy Sen for all the hard work he has done been in charge of the team for the past three years. We wish him all success in his future endeavours,” the statement further added.
