Shortlist for 2016/17 UEFA club competition awards revealed!

UEFA has announced the names of the players shortlisted for the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League positional awards. These awards will crown the best Goalkeeper, Defender, Midfielder and Forward of the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League season and will be presented during the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League group stage draw on Thursday, August 24 in Monaco.

The jury was comprised of the coaches of the 32 clubs which participated in the group stage of the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League, together with 55 journalists selected by the European Sports Media (ESM) group, representing each of UEFA’s member associations. The final result was based on the total number of votes cast by the coaches and the ESM members. The coaches were not allowed to vote for players of their own team.

The three players who received the most points overall in each positional category, in alphabetical order, are:

GOALKEEPERS: Gianluigi Buffon (ITA – Juventus FC); Manuel Neuer (GER – FC Bayern München); Jan Oblak (SVN – Club Atlético de Madrid)

DEFENDERS: Leonardo Bonucci (ITA – Juventus FC, now at AC Milan); Marcelo (BRA – Real Madrid CF); Sergio Ramos (ESP – Real Madrid CF)

MIDFIELDERS: Casemiro (BRA – Real Madrid CF); Toni Kroos (GER – Real Madrid CF); Luka Modrić (CRO – Real Madrid CF)

FORWARDS: Paulo Dybala (ARG – Juventus FC); Lionel Messi (ARG – FC Barcelona); Cristiano Ronaldo (POR – Real Madrid CF)

UEFA has also announced the shortlist for the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League Player of the Season award, which will be presented during the 2017/18 UEFA Europa League group stage draw, which takes place on Friday, August 25, also in Monaco.

The jury for this award was composed of the coaches of the 48 clubs which participated in the group stage of the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League, together with the 55 journalists from ESM group. The final result was based on the total number of votes cast by the coaches and the ESM members. The coaches were not allowed to vote for players of their own team.

The three players who received the most points overall, in alphabetical order, are:

PLAYERS: Zlatan Ibrahimović (SWE – Manchester United FC); Henrikh Mkhitaryan (ARM – Manchester United FC); Paul Pogba (FRA – Manchester United FC)

These awards complement the UEFA Men’s and Women’s Player of the Year awards, which will also be presented at the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League group stage draw ceremony, as in previous years. The three nominees for the overall UEFA Men’s and Women’s Player of the Year awards will be announced on 15 August, upon completion of UEFA Women’s EURO 2017.
