South Korea’s Hee-chan Hwang joins RB Leipzig from Red Bull Salzburg!

RB Leipzig have completed the signing of Hee-chan Hwang from sister club FC Red Bull Salzburg. The 24-year-old South Korean has signed a five-year deal and will wear the number 11.

After coming through the Pohang Steelers academy in South Korea, Hee-chan Hwang moved to Austria in 2015. He first played for Salzburg in January 2016, before spending 2018/19 on loan at Hamburger SV, appearing in 20 Bundesliga 2 matches and one DFB-Pokal tie.

The attacker scored 16 goals and recorded 22 assists in 40 games in all competitions for Salzburg last season. He managed three goals and five assists alone in just six UEFA Champions League outings.

Hee-chan Hwang said, “I’m excited for the new challenge at RB Leipzig! I want to help the team continue to be as successful as possible and achieve this young club’s ambitious goals. The club’s aims and style of football are both perfect for me. I want to take my next step as a professional here in Leipzig. On top of that, I want to score as many goals as possible.”

RB Leipzig sportng director Markus Krösche said, “In Hee-chan Hwang we have signed a player who fits the profile of what we are looking for. He can play in any attacking position, on the wings or as a main man in the middle. He makes our attack more flexible with his speed and mobility. He had a great season in Austria, as both a goalscorer and provider, and he particularly impressed in the Champions League.”

Hwang has already played 32 times for the South Korean national side. He was part of the Olympic side in 2016, and he scored against Germany in the group stages (3-3 draw).

He will have “Hee-chan” on the back of his shirt at RB Leipzig as the first name is always said first in South Korea. He isn’t eligible to play in the UEFA Champions League tournament in Lisbon in August.
