Sporting Clube de Goa Under-16s defeated Dempo SC U-16s 2-0 in a GFA U-16 North Zone playoffs held at the Duler Stadium in Mapusa on Tuesday morning. Anthony Fernandes (9’) opened the scoreline for Sporting Goa while skipper Aman Govekar (38’) doubled the lead.
Sporting Goa started off on a positive note as Alister Anthony and Jayson Fernandes did some exceptional work on the wings. The two combined well with skipper Aman upfront and managed to give some nervous moments to the Dempo defenders. Sporting Goa drew first blood in the 9th minute when a move started by Aman in the middle found Alister Anthony on the right, the latter dribbled past two defenders and fired an on target shot. The Dempo keeper managed to punch the ball back into the box only to find the tall Anthony Fernandes in the right spot who placed a perfect header beating everyone to give the Young Oranje a start they were looking for.
Sporting Goa doubled the lead when Dattaraj Gaonkar made a good run in the box but was brought down by a Dempo defender giving away a crucial penalty. Sporting skipper Aman who took the responsibility on him send the Dempo keeper the wrong side with a powerful right footer to make it 2–0 for Sporting Goa. Dempo should have pulled one back just before half time when Myron Ferrao made a mess of a good opportunity right in front of the Sporting Goa net. The score stayed 2–0 at the break.
Crossing over Dempo showed signs of a fight back. Just five minutes into the second half Joybert Almeida of Dempo beat his marker to get an on target strike but the Sporting Goa custodian Saiesh Kunkolkar made a brilliant save to keep the danger off. At the other end Alister Anthony made a promising run on the left trying to set up Dattaraj with a long cross however the latter failed to connect. Dempo once again came close when Velroy Carvalho’s long ball found Allan Cardozo in the Sporting Goa box but the latter shot it above the post from a handshaking distance. Sporting Goa created numerous opportunities especially with Jason Fernandes keeping the Dempo defence on their toes.
With this win Sporting Clube de Goa have progressed into the semifinals where they take on the Sesa Football Academy.
