United States MNT play ‘coldest game ever’!

Football – or soccer depending on where in the world you might be – is a sport that is rather versatile when it comes to the weather, as it can be played in almost any single ailment that may exist.

Indeed, we have seen a number of matches be played in wintery conditions that include heavy downpours of rain, we have seen matches played in blistering heat and we have seen games played where the wind has even had an impact on how far and straight the ball can travel.

However, a recent game that involved the USMNT appeared to really take the versatility of the game in regard to the weather to a whole new level.

On February 2, 2022, a match between the USMNT and Honduras was played in the FIFA World Cup Qualification stages at the Allianz Field in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Now, whilst that would not have typically been a problem because the stadium is designed for football given that it is the home of MLS side Minnesota United FC, the weather was something that was a rather big problem.

Ahead of the game, there were various temperature readings of three degrees Fahrenheit (-16 degrees Celsius) at kick-off, although it is understood that the temperature had plummeted to zero degrees Fahrenheit (-18 degrees Celsius) by the time the full-time whistle was blown whilst the wind-chill factor was said to be -12 degrees Fahrenheit (-24 degrees Celsius).

Naturally, the game has been dubbed the “coldest game ever”, and left two of the Honduras players having to allegedly deal with hyperthermia as a result of playing in the match; a game that would go on to end up 3-0 in the USMNT’s favour.

Indeed, there will have been some that may have been looking for the best sportsbook and casino options available at Casino Genie ahead of the game that may have been plucking for the hosts to run out as winners in their attempts to qualify for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Qatar 2022, although they will certainly have been happy that they stayed in the warmth and did not brave the cold.

There has not really been anything like it, although that perhaps is something to be thankful for given the weather conditions, although a match in Europe did come close to being as close as the game that recently took place.

Back in December 2010 in one of Europe’s premier continental club competitions – the UEFA Europa League – a match between Rosenborg Trondheim and Bayer 04 Leverkusen will be one that will live long in the memory for everyone that was involved in that contest.

The Germans were required to go and travel to Trondheim to play against their Norwegian group foes in what could potentially have been called Arctic conditions. The game, which took place at a stadium that happens to be around 300 miles from the Arctic Circle, recorded temperatures of below -14 degrees Celsius (5 degrees Fahrenheit) by the time the first whistle had been blown.

The game would go ahead and would end up seeing Bayer 04 Leverkusen take all three points back to Germany as Sidney Sam scored the only goal of the game.
