Update on 2026 FIFA World Cup candidate host city process!

While the selection process for the cities that will host the 2026 FIFA World Cup – the first edition to feature 48 teams and to be held across three countries: Canada, Mexico and the United States – is ongoing, FIFA can today announce two important updates in relation to the competition.

Vancouver becomes candidate host city

Following the submission of documentation by the Province of British Columbia/City of Vancouver in order to join the candidate host city process (with BC Place as the proposed stadium), as well as a recent inspection visit by a FIFA delegation, world football’s governing body has agreed to accept the city’s candidacy.

Vancouver is not new to FIFA events, having successfully hosted several matches during the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup – Canada, including the Final in front of over 50,000 spectators.

Hopfinger appointed Chief Strategy & Planning Officer and Flynn named Senior Executive Advisor
Further steps towards the delivery of the tournament have been taken with the appointment of Amy Hopfinger and Dan Flynn to key leadership roles within the local FIFA subsidiary in the United States for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Hopfinger joins as Chief Strategy and Planning Officer after serving US Soccer in a variety of important roles over 18 years – most recently as Vice President of Events. Flynn, who recently concluded 19 years of service at US Soccer as General Secretary and CEO, joins as Senior Executive Advisor.

“As we approach the selection of the venues for what will be the largest sporting event in the world, it is great to be able to welcome Amy and Dan to the FIFA team,” said Colin Smith, FIFA’s Chief Tournaments & Events Officer. “Their vast experience will provide leadership and continuity for the delivery of a transformative football event – the 2026 FIFA World Cup.”
